I am captivated by the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures, incorporating Chinoiserie inspired design is a brilliant way to bring exoticism, luxury and timeless charm to interiors. In the formal dining room of our Balwyn project, we created something truly unique on the walls of our client’s home. We repurposed this beautiful six-panel oriental folding screen, traditionally used to divide a room or to add privacy, as a wall hanging for greater impact. It takes centre stage on the swirling marbled wallpaper. It depicts Asian cranes, said to be the messenger of peace, symbol of wisdom, loyalty and long life; and bamboo trees, symbol of virtue in Chinese culture, hand painted on champagne leaf and a lacquered frame. Topped by a vintage Italian Murano-glass chandelier and framed by twin-leafy wall sconces, this art-piece is an absolute eye-catcher in this eclectic yet modern interior.
